Digital Signature Certificate is a secure digital key (USB e-Token) issued by certifying authorities to validate and verify the identity of the person or entity holding the certificate. It uses public-key encryption to create signatures and contains the signature in digital format. A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) contains information about the user’s name, pin code, country, email address, date of issuance, and the name of the certifying authority.

There are three types of Digital Signature Certificates issued by certifying authorities:
Issued to individual subscribers and used to confirm that the user’s name and email contact details from the clearly defined subject lie within the database of the certifying authority.
Issued to directors and signatory authorities of companies for e-filing with the Registrar of Companies (ROC). Mandatory for individuals signing manual documents while filing returns with the ROC. Discontinued as of 1st Jan 2021; Class 3 DSC is issued instead.
Issued to directors/authorized signatories of companies, professionals, etc., for signing documents digitally. Vendors participating in online tenders must have a Class 3 DSC.
